Harvest Festival and Autumn

As summer ends and we move into autumn we notice a change in the weather. We are over the rainy season and hope that autumn brings us bright sunny days and cooler temperatures. During the autumn, we welcome the celebration of Harvest. Harvest festivals are celebrations of the food that grows on the land. They happen at different times of the year around the world and are held when crops are harvested.

In China and Hong Kong we celebrate the Harvest Moon Festival. Chinese people believe that the moon is brightest at this time in the year, so it is the best time for harvest, but also friendships. People spend time with their friends and families sharing foods and wishing their loved ones health good fortune.

Below is a fun Harvest activity you can do with your family.

You will need: Construction paper, Poster paint in green, red and brown

Instructions: Use lots of green handprints to make a roughly round shape for the top of the tree. Underneath use the side of the hand to create a brown line for the trunk. When the tree is dry add red fingerprints for the apples.
