Reading with your child
It is so important to spend time reading with your child. Sharing time together reading is a great bonding experience and it helps to develop a child’s language skills and imagination! Make reading time fun and your child will develop a love of books which ultimately will help them academically. It has been proven that children who read to from an early age have better language skills and more of an aptitude for learning as they grow older.
Also in the hectic pace of life in Hong Kong it can sometimes be difficult to have quality time with your child. Set aside at least 5-10 minutes every day where you can spend time reading with your child and they will truly enjoy this one on one time together and you will love it as well! So take your time, try not to rush and just bond together doing something that educates them and helps them discover a magical world outside their home. I personally love to snuggle up next to my son in his bed for reading time and we always enjoy this treasured time together.
Sometimes your child will pick a favourite story and ask you to read it over and over again. As tiring as this may be please keep going as it is obviously catering to their interest at that time. Repetition is also a great way for them to practice their memory skills. My son’s favourite book that I now know off by heart as we have read it together hundreds of times is ‘Tiddler’ by Julia Donaldson. Other favourites of his are ‘Walking through the Jungle’ by Julie Lacome, ‘Sometime I Like to Curl up in a Ball’ by Vicki Churchill & Charles Fuge, any Peppa Pig book and also any books about Space.
